About This Trip

Split is the cultural and urban heart of Dalmatia. This 1,700-year-old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, packed with archaeological, historical and cultural monuments — chief among them the famous Diocletian’s Palace. In summer the city becomes one big stage under the open sky, alive with shops, hidden courtyards and Mediterranean energy.

On this private walking tour your licensed local guide leads you through the historical core that grew within and around Diocletian’s Palace. Step inside the remarkably preserved cellars — once built to raise the imperial residence above, and later a Game of Thrones filming location — then climb to the Peristyle and the Cathedral of St. Domnius, originally the emperor’s mausoleum and said to be one of the oldest cathedrals in the world.

Continue into the beautiful medieval, Venetian-era quarter around People’s Square (Pjaca) before the walk winds down on the Riva, Split’s palm-lined waterfront full of restaurants and cafés. Because it’s private, the pace and focus are tailored entirely to your interests.

Itinerary

10:00 – 10:25

Start time is flexible and confirmed at booking.

10:25 – 11:10

Step inside Diocletian’s Palace, the 1,700-year-old heart of Split. Explore the remarkably preserved cellars (substructures) that once supported the emperor’s residence and later served as a Game of Thrones filming location.

11:10 – 11:25

Climb to the Peristyle, the palace’s monumental central courtyard, and admire the Cathedral of St. Domnius — originally Diocletian’s mausoleum and said to be one of the oldest cathedrals in the world.

11:25 – 11:45

Pass through the Golden Gate to the towering statue of Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović — rub the saint’s polished toe for good luck and a return to Split.

11:45 – 12:00

Wander the medieval Venetian quarter around People’s Square (Pjaca), the Old Town Hall and charming Fruit Square, with an optional glimpse of the historic fish market, before the tour winds down back on the Riva where you’re free to explore at your own pace.
